Social media matters

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

It used to be easy defining “the media”: it was the TV, the radio, newspapers and magazines. Usually understood, easily-reached. And professional.

But the landscape’s changed – what is “the media” in 2010? Anybody can be a writer, a journalist, a reporter, a news anchor. They may not be listened to by anybody but it’s possible through blogs, podcasts and sites such as Facebook to broadcast (or narrowcast) to anybody.

Blogging from the iPhone…

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Just a short test post loyal reader. Thought I ought to try out the WordPress app for my iPhone.

I tend to be very 2009 and use my laptop to write my posts, so thought I’d see how the iPhone fared.

Erm. It’s a mixed bag. Sitting on a bench enjoying the morning sun whilst I write is a pleasant change. But, as a proficient typist who tends to “just write” then edit later, I’m not sure if iPhone blogging is suitable for anything other than short and sweet posts.

Now an iPad, that might be a different story…

Why remember facts any more?

Just had a call from my girlfriend. Nothing unusual in that, we speak most days.

The unusual part was that she called the landline, when normally she’d call my mobile. She’d left her mobile at home, so had to go hunting for my work number to give me a call.

Of all the people in the world, my girlfriend is the person I speak to most on the phone – and yet she doesn’t know my mobile number off the top of her head. Which is fair enough, as I don’t know hers either.

Top video from a top fella…

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

It’s the Internet generation folks, where 1,000,001 talented people are making music (and a few quid) without the need for major labels. One such person is Chance, a top fella from the States who I’ve been fortunate enough to listen to – and exchange emails with – for a four or five years.

After a year off, he’s back with a great new song and a fantastic new video.

Enjoy.

Scary stat

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Speaking at a the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe, California, Google CEO Eric Schmidt told the assembled audience that “we” (the human race) create as much information in two days now as we did from the dawn of man through 2003.

Now that is scary.

Are we ever truly unreachable?

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

How many ways can you contact a single individual? Off the top of my head, I can contact most of my friends via their… home phone, office phone, mobile phone, Skype phone (and chat), text, MSN/AIM etc, Facebook chat, Facebook email, ‘normal’ email, LinkedIn email and, of course, by knocking on their door.

So is it any wonder that, in this day and age we almost demand immediate response to our questions and queries?

Steve Jobs kills Flash in one afternoon

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Adobe, this is your ass. Apple just handed it to you on a plate.

The following is an ‘open letter’ that Apple boss Steve Jobs has posted onto the company’s web site this afternoon.

Expect Adobe’s share price to drop… and drop…

Apple gives Adobe the finger

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Now the fight gets a little more interesting.

In the red corner we have Apple. Champions of industrial design. Noted control freaks. And, frankly, one of the few companies pushing the boundaries in consumer technology at the moment.

In the blue corner we have Adobe. The people who brought you Photoshop, Illustrator and, of course, Flash. Continue reading...

Snow v Technology

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Unless you’ve not looked out of a window for the past two weeks, you can’t have failed to notice that the UK is in the midst of the worst snow and ice to hit the island for almost 30 years.

(You could of course also be from another country, so welcome to our little corner of digital Britain).

I remember the winter of 1981 extremely-well because that December in the middle of the peak of the worst weather, my family and I moved house, into a nice new home at the top of a rather steep hill.
