Brilliant interactive advert

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

When done well, interactive advertising on the web is a wonderful thing. But, too often, it’s not. I talked last week about the Old Spice advert which has spawned a series of social media spin offs, well this new advert from Tippex ticks the social media and interactive boxes.

Give it a whirl… you won’t regret it.

Apparently my Windows PC is broken… again…

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Loyal readers (hello Mum) will remember this story where I received a call from “David James” to inform me that there was a problem with my Windows PC.

(I recommend you read the earlier post for the full back story!).

Back then it was fun to ‘mess’ with the head of the poor guy sat in a call centre in Delhi but this time I couldn’t be quite as bothered.

Facebook down: world fails to end

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

As I write this, it appears that Facebook is suffering some serious downtime. The main site’s been up and down like a yo-yo for the past 12 hours – and is now dead – and the mobile site occasionally springs to life for a few minutes… before disappearing again.

Blogging from the iPhone…

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Just a short test post loyal reader. Thought I ought to try out the WordPress app for my iPhone.

I tend to be very 2009 and use my laptop to write my posts, so thought I’d see how the iPhone fared.

Erm. It’s a mixed bag. Sitting on a bench enjoying the morning sun whilst I write is a pleasant change. But, as a proficient typist who tends to “just write” then edit later, I’m not sure if iPhone blogging is suitable for anything other than short and sweet posts.

Now an iPad, that might be a different story…

Now *this* is cool…

…or maybe it’s just me.

“Eye of the tiger”, the Rocky classic by Survivor, played by a bunch of guys using nothing but iPads as musical instruments… oh, and occasionally spinning on their heads.

The apps they used are:
Real Drums
Pro Keys
Baby Scratch
Guitar Mania

(I’ve found these links myself based on information in the YouTube video’s comments… hope they’re the right ones!).

Hosting company suggestions?

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Right, it’s unlikely they’ll see this…

I’m looking for a new hosting company. After almost 10 years with the current ones, the customer service has hit rock bottom since they were bought out by a larger company. Support requests take 4/5 days to be replied to, auto-renewal of domains doesn’t happen and last week I got someone else’s cancellation notice emailed to me.

Doesn’t fill one with much trust really…

So: I need a reliable hosting company for 10 or so domains, across 6-8 accounts, access to MySQL, mod_rewrite (some hosts don’t allow it) and an easy/quick control panel for me to add domains/accounts without the need for anything involving a terminal.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Top video from a top fella…

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

It’s the Internet generation folks, where 1,000,001 talented people are making music (and a few quid) without the need for major labels. One such person is Chance, a top fella from the States who I’ve been fortunate enough to listen to – and exchange emails with – for a four or five years.

After a year off, he’s back with a great new song and a fantastic new video.

Enjoy.

PC vs Mac: the debate goes on

So, those folk at Microsoft have noticed that Apple has started to get popular on the computer front and decided to come out with their guns blazing.

Scary stat

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Speaking at a the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe, California, Google CEO Eric Schmidt told the assembled audience that “we” (the human race) create as much information in two days now as we did from the dawn of man through 2003.

Now that is scary.
