Music 1966, album of the month, beatles, george harrison, I'm only sleeping, john lennon, paul mccartney, revolver, ringo starr, suggs
Right, nice song George, don’t call us Paul… time for Johnny boy to have a track.
“I’m only sleeping” is about the joys of, well, staying in bed and having a snooze. The dreamlike state of the track is helped by Harrison’s guitar solo which he recorded backwards. Yes, not content with being a great guitarist, George recorded the entire solo in reverse so that when the tape was flipped to the “right direction” it would sound ever-so slightly odd, enhancing the vibe of the track. Show off git.
Even a terrible cover version by Suggs from Madness can’t take anything away from this song.
Now, here’s an odd fan-made video to go with the song: remember when Lennon announced The Beatles were “bigger than Jesus.” They don’t like that kind of thing in the US.
Like “Taxman”, here’s another quite peculiar video of the track… is that Tommy Cooper doing some of the voices?
And, so you know how bad it truly is, here’s Suggs’ version.
Next up… “Love you to”.
